The Socotra Island, a location renowned for its exotic and varied species, is home to the Monocentropus balfouri. With blue legs and a tan body, this tarantula offers a stunning contrast of blue and tan hues. Its legs can spread out to a maximum of 7 inches, and females can live up to 12 years. It is an old world tarantula, which implies that its venomous bite serves as its only means of defence and that it lacks urticating hairs. If not provoked, it is not particularly aggressive or protective. As long as there is adequate room and food for everyone, it is also one of the few species of tarantula that can coexist peacefully with other members of the same species.
Although the Monocentropus balfouri is not a species for novice keepers, it is suitable for those with some previous experience with old world tarantulas. It needs a terrestrial enclosure with several inches of substrate for burrowing that is longer than it is tall. A hide and a water dish are also required.
